Structures #16

$200.00

Layered Ink on Paper.
12 x 12 inches

My works on paper are constructions of the imagination exploring form, volume and interpretations of the natural world. Layers of ink, gouache, graphite and embroidered knots are built up on the paper’s surface till a structure with dimension is formed. Working on paper allows me to become lost in the process of making. It is an essential daily practice that acts as a sieve, fleshing out what is most important and informing the larger works in the studio.

The "Structures" series of ink on paper works are inspired by tree roots, skeletal structures and patterns found in nature. I imagine how everything is connected and forms an intricate system that communicates and interacts as one. Slowly, ink is built up on the paper as I attempt to create dimensionality on a flat surface. I use an assortment of ink pens, all at varying levels of fullness, that enable me to create depth and shadow. When I am making these, time is not a factor and I am instantly lost in the process.

About This Work:

Drawing is an integral part of my practice. With each series I make, I incorporate pieces made on paper. These ink drawings on archival paper are made in conjunction with the paintings on stretched silk in the series, I Dream in Layers. Slowly, i build up the ink surface incorporating the beauty and imperfection of nature as an abstracted form. Frame it or hang unframed as is to see the true details of the work.
