Drawing Practice

My drawings are constructions of the imagination informed by decay and the patina of age. Layers of ink or threaded knots are built up on the paper’s surface till a structure with dimension is formed. Drawing enables me to become lost in the process of making, without thought or concern.  It is an essential daily practice that acts as a sieve, fleshing out what is most important. Works from each series are available for purchase at Artspace.

Structures:

Drawing in three dimensions on a flat surface.

The "Structures" series of ink on paper works are inspired by tree roots, skeletal structures and patterns found in nature. I imagine how everything is connected and forms an intricate system that communicates and interacts as one. Slowly, ink is built up on the paper as I attempt to create dimensionality on a flat surface. I use an assortment of ink pens, all at varying levels of fullness, that enable me to create depth and shadow. When I am making these, time is not a factor and I am instantly lost in the process.

Priced at $200 each, all available work can be found at ARTSPACE.

Thread Drawings:

Drawing with Thread

I wanted to recreate the delicate structure of lichens, moss and other organisms found deep in the woods and stretched across rocks. These systems take years to form and are imbued with gorgeous colors and patterns. Embroidering through paper and building up layers of knots seemed the perfect way to replicate what nature does so effortlessly.

Layers of french knots are constructed from thin sewing thread, slowly building up the surface until subtle dimension is achieved. I work on these until the thread takes form, permeating the paper without destroying it. Each knot is made with precision, accounting for the delicate nature of the paper and the desired result.

The unexpected surprise is what occurs on the back which reveals a pattern made without intention and allowing for chance to play a role in the work. Each Thread Drawing is really two works on one paper.

Monuments to Time:

Invented Landscapes

Monuments to Time began by drawing, from observation, the massive granite ledges that separate soil from sea along the northern coast of Maine. As I began to really know these forms and how they were shaped, I started to create my own. This series of invented landscapes explores the effects of time and the ever-changing environment on a seemingly imperishable raw material, stone.

Maine granite has been quarried for centuries, building cities and monuments around the United States. In New York City for example, granite quarried from this rural region of Maine are found everywhere: on sidewalks, buildings and park monuments. I like to think that nature has found a way to permeate these “jungles” built by humans.

My drawings of invented landscapes are monuments to the effects of time and my way of bringing nature and human together.
