Since I received my MFA in 2008, a lot has changed for artists wanting access to programs, non-profits, residencies and alternative exhibition spaces. Some have closed ( a fond farewell to Nurture Art), some have gone a different direction (The Drawing Center) and others have become inordinately competitive.
I personally thrive on making site-responsive installations that are not necessarily commercial. The projects I have worked on and loved doing would not have been possible without the access to great alternative spaces.
There is a new breed of self-starters out there making space for art, creating communities of artists and doing it there way. I decided to feature spaces that are artist focused and genuine in their mission and approach. These can be programs, alternative exhibition spaces, residencies, artists groups, etc. If they have a fee, that will be clearly posted. Each of these programs will be vetted thoroughly. And I will only feature programs I strongly believe in.
The interviews here give a sense of the space being profiled, why they created their program and how it impacts artists. I have also asked them to give advice to artists from their perspective. The intent is to build a network of spaces that define the arts of this moment. It is an exciting time to be sure. Hope you join me here!
